An Ode to Being Impractical in College

An Ode to Being Impractical in College Today, Ive been thinking about  how bizarre it is to be a senior and just how different I feel now vs. three years ago (when I was so freaked out about college move-in, I hyperventilated into a Jimmy John’s sandwich). Im older and wiser now, but I’m still great at imagining dystopian  versions of my future. The duality of man/college student is the capacity for both incredible calm and incredible panic. But Id like to preface this post with: If you’re not in college yet or new to it, you’re going be just fine. And if college is nothing new, then join me in a panicky sprint across the Quad. The slow-moving zombie of adulthood is creeping  just a little too close. (But I also have a sneaking suspicion well be just fine.) No matter which of these two camps you fall intoâ€"new to college or college savvyâ€"hear me out. This year, join an extracurricular or take a job or volunteer just because it sounds like fun. Not because it seems practical. Not because it fits perfectly into your ten-year plan or has a nice spot on your CV/resume. Just  for fun. You might be thinking, Hey, I do fun stuff! Cool, man. Im glad. But Im talking more making a commitment and less I went bowling last Friday, and it was a good time. Sophomore year, I decided that I needed to fill in my free time with something nice. I needed something beyond the classroom  that didn’t feel mostly like  a means to an end. I thought back to my babysitting days. I think kids are really cool little people. I enjoy hanging with them, and I always have. So I went to Quad Day and joined the Illini Mentor Program (IMP). Now I mentor every week of the school year, and I can honestly say it makes every week better. However, just because its fun doesnt mean its not  challenging. In these past few years, I’ve built  two totally different relationships with two totally different kids. One who didn’t like me very much, but who needed someone to listen to him and respect him. The other, again, not my biggest fan, but who thought my jokes were funny eventually. I have the distinct honor of being a part of their growing up. In turn, they remind me every week just how little I know (like, nothing) and how much more I have to learn (a lot). Having fun like this has always had distinct benefits, too. Its made me a better communicator with all sorts of people, not just kids. Im a better problem solver (because kids present you with a lot of problems to solve). And I  get  kids in a way I didnt before. They were just benefits I didnt expect. And I get it. Your time is valuable. Your time in college has a literal price tag. But you should fill it with at least one thing that you do just to feel good. When you make a commitment out of something you enjoy, I think you commit to being a better, healthier person. Plus, it might end up being the thing you always talk about in job interviews or the source of some of your best college memories. You deserve all the great experiences in college, so Im begging you, be impractical! Fall Leaf Colors by Tree Species

Certain broadleaf trees can be uniquely identified by their brilliant fall leaf color. In some cases, a trees common name is derived from its primary autumn leaf color, such as red maple and yellow poplar. The most common leaf colors of fall are red, yellow, and orange. Some tree species can express several of these colors simultaneously as the season progresses. How Fall Leaf Color Develops All leaves start out in summer as green. This is because of the presence of a group of green pigments known as chlorophyll. When these green pigments are abundant in the leafs cells during the growing season, they mask the color of any other pigments that may be present in the leaf. Chlorophyll in the leaves is the trees main means of producing nutrients during the summer. But with autumn comes the destruction of chlorophyll. This demise of the green pigments allows other, previously masked colors to come forward. Those unmasked fall colors quickly become markers for individual deciduous tree species. The two other pigments present in leaves are: Carotenoid  (produces yellow, orange, and brown)Anthocyanin  (produces red) Trees With Red Leaves Red is produced by warm, sunny fall days and cool fall nights. Leftover food in the leaf is transformed into the color red through anthocyanin pigments. These red pigments also color cranberries, red apples, blueberries, cherries, strawberries, and plums. Some maples,  sweetgum, and oaks have red fall leaves. Dogwoods, black tupelo trees, sourwood trees, persimmons, and some sassafras trees also have red leaves. Yellow and Orange Shades Chlorophyll is destroyed with the onset of autumnal conditions, which reveals the orange and yellow leaf colors, or carotenoid pigments. Deep orange is a combination of the red and yellow color-making process. These yellow and orange pigments also color carrots, corn, canaries, and daffodils, as well as egg yolks, rutabagas, buttercups, and bananas. Hickory, ash, some maples, the yellow poplar (tulip tree), some oaks (white, chestnut, bear), some sassafras, some sweetgum, beech, birch, and sycamore trees have yellow leaves in the fall. Weathers Effect Some years see more brilliant color displays than others. It all depends on weather conditions. Temperature, the amount of sunlight and how much rain fell all are contributing factors in color intensity and in how long theyll remain. Forensic scientists use the same technology, tools and methods used by other scientists doing other types of research, including microscopes, computers, and lasers. Answer: Introduction: Being a person of an Arabic origin and having a belief that I can speak a perfect English I found it astonishing when I am reminded that my English is pragmatic. This ascription results from the ideology that only Native English speakers can understand and speak the language fluently. Out of this perception, pragmatic language is only embraced within the organizational context and it if is attributable to the non-native English speaker only. As Bailey, Canagarajah, Lanc, Powers (2016) puts it, being non-native English you have to acquire perfect English to qualify for certain positions. For example, Bailey, Canagarajah, Lanc, Powers in their article noted that Violet found that pragmatic English was restricted within the geographical scale and was acceptable in the workplace. However, the use of perfect English was restricted within the global scale. Additionally, there is a perception that for someone to have the successful career he or she must qualify as perfect English speaker. The attitude mentioned above discredits the non-native English speaker who qualifies as perfect English speakers but is still being referred to as pragmatic English speakers. For example, having studied and practiced English language for several years does not qualify me as perfect English speaker. I cannot solely argue that I am a perfect language speaker because of the social context where I was practicing my career. However, the perception that perfect English is a global language has influences many of my fellow citizens to acquire it. Having stayed with Native English speakers in Australia, I have developed a negative attitude towards my experience with them. Perfect English entails understanding the little details that the pragmatic English language speakers do not know. This impression has made it difficult for me to associate with the native language speakers. This attitude can be attributed to Bailey, Canagarajah, Lanc, Powers (2016) argument that there is a psychological barrier that exists between the pragmatic and perfect English speakers. The Roman people were a overly proud and highly religious people, whose sense of identity as romans came primarily from their accomplishments in war and their respect of their ancestors. By examining Livy's The Early History of Rome, we can identify these traits through roman patterns of behavior and the foundation myths that their nation is built upon. The romans repeatedly display not only an overdeveloped personal sense of pride, but an exceptional pride in their nation - taking precedence over even family loyalty. The first example of this Roman pride is seen in the very first foundation myth of Rome, the tale of Romulus and Remus. The second of the two versions of this story tells how after the auspices have indicated Romulus as the rightful leader of this new nation, "Remus, by way of jeering at his brother, jumped over the half-built walls of the new settlement, whereupon Romulus killed him in a fit of rage, adding the threat, ?So perish whoever else shall overleap my battlements( P.40 Livy) .'" Not only do we see a foreshadowing of Rome's violent nature in this tale, but it seems to indicate a strong belief in the superiority of this ( barely existant ) nation, one that necessitates a national pride of greater magnitude than the even the strength of the loyalty between brothers. This kind of loyalty to country, as displayed by the Rome's founder, certainly sets a precendent for later roman citizens. Not surprisingly then, we see this same kind of pride with similar consequences later on following a battle between Rome and the Albans. The victory had been decided, not by a full scale war, but by a contest between three men from each country ( two sets of three brothers ). This contest left Rome victorious and five people dead - only one roman brother stood living. The victor returned to rome carrying the ?triple spoils' and,"slung across [ his ] shoulders was a cloak, and [ his sister ] recognized it as the cloak she had made with her own hand for her lover. The sight overcame her : she loosened her hair and, in a voice choked with tears, called her dead lovers name. That his sister should dare to grieve at the very moment of his own triumph and in the midst of national rejoicing filled horatius with such uncontrollable rage that he drew his sword and stabbed her to the heart( Livy 62)." Again we see the word "rage" used to describe this similarly extreme exhibition of extreme national pride. Back in the foundation myth of Romulus and Remus, we see another aspect of Roman pride. There is some indication that, In Livy's time, there was some suspicion that Greek infulence in Rome was detrimental to Roman society. Livy seems to emphasize the absence of any kind of formal schooling ( which would have been greek ) in the adolescence of both Romulus and Remus ( P.38 Livy ) The idea that Romulus in particular, was a self-made man, shows that Rome owes nothing to previous and other nations like Greece and so the pride of such a great nation is all theirs. There is plenty of evidence that Rome was always a highly religious nation. From even as early as the founding of the nation we see their dependance on auguries of the gods to make important decisions - namely the choice between Romulus and Remus as their leader. " As the brothers were twins and all question of seniority was thereby precluded, they determined to ask the tutelary gods of the countryside to declare by augury which of them should govern the new town once it was founded, and give his name to it ( p.40 Livy )." More than any one other aspect of Roman behavior, I feel that recognition and respect of the ways of their ancestors as the ways of ?True' Romans was the most primary source from which Romans defined there identity. This respect stemmed from oral tradition and early historians works that have not survived to us, but which Livy owes his knowledge.
